Announcing the Enhanced Google Earth Engine App with Advanced Environmental Data for Southern Africa

A few weeks ago, my colleague Javier Bravo García announced the launch of a Google Earth Engine (GEE) application that includes maps of bush encroachment and other environmental information from southern Africa.

We are pleased to announce that we have decided to migrate the services we have developed to a new language and environment, significantly enhancing the tool’s capabilities. This upgrade will allow us to create more specialized services tailored to the specific needs of Namibia, Botswana and South Africa (Within the framework of the SteamBio Africa project),

These improvements will enable us to provide more comprehensive and accurate environmental data to support better decision making and promote sustainable development in the region. Our goal is to enhance our customers’ ability to effectively monitor and manage their environmental resources.

The new technology stack, which includes Python, ReactJS and several libraries, allows us to maximize the potential of GEE. This allows us to collect, process and visualize large amounts of data in an easy-to-use environment.

Technological Overview:

  • Python: A versatile and powerful programming language, Python is widely used for data analysis and machine learning. Its rich ecosystem of libraries and tools makes it ideal for processing large datasets and performing complex computations.
  • ReactJS: This JavaScript library is essential for building modern, dynamic user interfaces. ReactJS enables us to build responsive and intuitive web applications that can efficiently handle large amounts of data and provide a seamless user experience.
  • Google Earth Engine: A cloud-based platform for planetary-scale environmental data analysis, Google Earth Engine combines a multi-petabyte catalogue of satellite imagery and geospatial datasets with powerful analysis capabilities. It allows us to perform large-scale spatial and temporal analyses that are critical for environmental monitoring and management.

By leveraging these technologies, we can deliver valuable insights into environmental trends and changes, helping our users to address challenges such as bush encroachment more effectively.
