Detailed description of project
RestECO is a national project funded by the Ministry of Economy, Industry, and Competitiveness in Spain, focusing on the Guadiamar Green Corridor. This area faced ecological damage due to a mining accident in 1998. The project aims to develop restoration methods for ecosystems affected by mining, with goals like studying native plant diversity’s impact on ecosystem function, assessing tree species’ ability to stabilize contaminated soil and store trace elements, evaluating carbon sequestration potential, and proposing models to enhance ecosystem services in Mediterranean environments, including soil quality improvement and climate change mitigation.
Project titleWATSAT. ESTIMATING WATER EFFICIENCY IN SOIL USING SATELLITE IMAGES AND MODELING APPROACH
CountrySpain
Name of clientDIVA – Boosting innovative Digitech Value chains for Agrofood, forestry and environment (H2020)
Origin of fundingPublic funds
Dates (star-end)01/04/2019 – 31/01/2020
Detailed description of projectThe WATSAT project aims to develop a decision support system that estimates soil water content using satellite imagery to improve water management efficiency. The system uses multiple data sources from on-farm measurements and external resources such as climate platforms and Copernicus. The prototype developed, Watsat Desktop, generates a database for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to calculate soil water content, taking into account external factors such as NDVI data from SENTINEL 2 imagery. Tested in Andalusia, the method correlates NDVI with soil moisture, overcoming challenges such as cloud cover and outliers. Farmers have expressed interest in consistent and accessible data, while the project provides ideas for market integration and emphasises stakeholder involvement. As CAP budgets decrease, ICT tools could support sustainable farming practices and cost-effective monitoring for authorities.
