We join the initiative People4Soil

Evenor Tech joins the Peopoe4SOIL initiative

people4soil_logo

«People 4 Soil» is a free and open network of European NGOs, research institutes, farmers associations and environmental groups. We are very worried about the increasing degradation of soils both in the EU and at global level: erosion, sealing, loss of organic matter, compaction, salinisation, landslides and contamination have negative impacts on human health, food security, natural ecosystems, biodiversity and climate, as well as on our economy.

New scientific publication

New published paper related with Forest Ecosystem Services, in collaboration with Institute of Natural Resources and Agrobiology of Seville (IRNAS) Title: Evaluation of forest ecosystem services in Mediterranean areas. A regional case study in South Spain – View Highlights:
  • Evaluation of forest ecosystem services: regulation of carbon stocks and soil erosion, and cork oak provisioning.
  • Standardization of the forest ecosystems services by using the mappings of land use (LULCMA) at regional and european scale.
  • Assessing how these ecosystem services are affected by drivers of change, mainly land use change.
Thanks to REDIAM (Junta de Andalucía) and co-authors for build this piece of science about our Region Andalusia (Spain), and how it could be upscaling at European level.

Vital soil saving techniques

As World Soil Day on 5th December 2015 marks the ending of the International Year of Soils, it is reassuring to know that scientists will still be working to find solutions to protect our soils.

2015 was declared International Year of Soils by the United Nations in order to raise awareness of the profound importance of soil for human life . As well as providing us with food and fibre, soils can also play an important role in climate change mitigation by storing carbon and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. Meaning they have a vital role to play in the current Climate Change discussions in Paris.

As global attention now moves away from soils, scientists working on an EU funded project called RECARE will still be developing solutions to the problems of soil erosion, soil compaction, soil contamination, flooding and landslides, desertification, soil biodiversity loss, decline in organic matter, salinization and soil sealing. The challenges to peoples’ lives and homes are detailed in an international series of documentaries showing how damaging soils, damages lives.

RECARE researchers are working with the local people across Europe in 17 case study areas to put soil saving solutions into practice. Low tech but scientifically informed interventions are set to transform the protection of soils and the lives of those affected by them. Examples include, grassed waterways, straw mulching or terracing to prevent soil erosion and flooding, the use of intercropping to increase soil organic matter, or the planting of particular tree species to remove the toxins from contaminated soils. RECARE has already produced a review of potential measures that can be applied to combat these soil threats .

Professor Coen Ritsema is the RECARE Project Co-ordinator and is based at Wageningen University, The Netherlands. He said,

“As the International Year of Soils draws to a close, it is good to know that work continues to protect this precious resource. The project team is committed to ensuring that we are able to provide people with practical, affordable ways in which they can protect our soil resources. 2015 has raised awareness of the soils vital role in all of our lives, now we need to take action”.

RECARE researchers will continue their work to develop effective prevention, remediation and restoration measures in the battle against soil threats until 2018, when the project is due to finish.

ANDALAND Workshop

Last September 10, 2015 Workshop about Andaland System was held at the Institute of Natural Resources and Agrobiology of Seville (IRNAS)(CSIC). This system is a milestone tasks 1.3.2 RECUPERA2020 project, coordinated by the group of Irrigation and Ecophysiology of Crops IRNAS-CSIC, and active collaboration with the engineering firm INCLAM water, and assessment firm Evenor-Tech soils.

ANDALAND is an online tool to make decisions about sustainable use of land and water taking in account socio-economic aspects, with special emphasis on management of different irrigation technologies, adapted to the environmental characteristics of Andalusia in global change scenarios. In addiction the platform also provide a paper catalog of Andalusia soils. It’s expected that both finally will be launched at the end of November 2015.

The purpose of the event was to evaluate the suitability of the tool with potential users, land managers Andalusia academic, administrative and private sectors. The event was attended by representatives of the Consejería de Agricultura y Pesca of Junta de Andalucía, FERAGUA, WWF, Department of Human Geography de la University of Seville, CSIC, CITAGRO, TEPRO y AQUAMÁTICA.

In the event various presentations and participatory exercises was maked in order to added value of the platform ANDALAND according to the experience of water managers and floor they were made in Andalusia. We thank your interest attendees and the comments and criticisms made.

In addiction to other applications, ANDALAND system can be used in precision agriculture to achieve a more efficient agriculture in terms of productivity and environmental sustainability. The system is presented as an effective tool to assess the quality of soil and water, essential basis of life and support of multiple production systems.

We went to CONDEGRES

With INCLAM Water Engineering, Evenor Tech has participated in the Seventh National Symposium on control of degradation and soil restoration which was held in Bilbao from 23 to June 26.

In this conference we have presented the works and results of ANDALAND, a support system in decision making for the assessment of water and soil resources as well as management technologies associated with agricultural systems.

The ANDALAND project is being coordinated by the Institute of Natural Resources and Agrobiology of Seville and is part of RECUPERA2020.

Evaluation of ANDALAND system

The enrollment period begins for the Workshop «ANDALAND: Decision Support for evaluating the efficiency of the use and protection of water and soil» The workshop is part of the line «monitoring of crops and irrigation strategies» in the project RECOVER 2020. It aims to show and validate with the agents of interest selected on-line «andaland» application. This application helps in making decisions concerning the assessment of water and soil resources as well as management technologies associated with agricultural systems.
